Mercedes-Benz AG is building a new press plant at the Kecskemét site, thus increasing the flexibility of global production network of the whole company group. Pioneering in the field of the digitisation of material processing, the new plant is expected to start production in 2022, by which time the entire Kecskemét plant will operate in a carbon-neutral way.
Daimler AG is one of the largest and oldest German automotive companies. Its first predecessor was founded by Karl Benz in 1883. Today Mercedes-Benz is considered the world's most successful automotive brand. Headquartered in Stuttgart, the company currently has production bases on five continents, employing nearly 300,000 people.
The first Kecskemét production unit announced in 2008 started the production of Mercedes-Benz B-Class in 2012, followed by that of the CLA 4-door compact coupe in 2013 and the CLA Shooting Brake in 2015. In addition to the revamped CLA model range, which is still being manufactured exclusively in Kecskemét, the new A-Class has been added to the product range of the Hungarian manufacturing site since 2018, providing work for more than 4,400 people.
The new press shop in Hungary worth more than EUR 100 million, as new member of the European press shop network, contributes to the flexibility of the German premium car manufacturer's entire production network. The construction of the new unit of 23,000 square metres, expected to start operating in 2022, will also strengthen the Kecskemét factory's key position in the Mercedes-Benz global production chain, while compact domestic vehicles manufactured in Hungary will consist of more parts manufactured locally in the future.
In addition to the construction of the press shop, Mercedes will continue to take significant steps to optimise energy efficiency as a result of which the Kecskemét plant will operate in a completely carbon-neutral way by 2022, that is, by the 10th anniversary of the start of its production.
