Medicontur announces R&D-focused investments

2026. 01. 22.

Medicontur, a Hungarian company recognized on the global market of manufacturers specializing in the development of medical devices, is further expanding its domestic presence. As part of its latest investments totaling EUR 20.8 million, the company will expand the activities of its Zsámbék headquarters with an R&D project, increase its manufacturing capacity, and implement developments aimed at green transition under the Factory Rescue Program. Through the project, the strategic Hungarian manufacturer will create 58 new jobs, including 10 research and development positions.

Founded in 1989 and fully Hungarian-owned, Medicontur has grown into one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of intraocular lenses (surgically implanted artificial lenses). The Zsámbék-based company specializing in medical device development is the market leader in Hungary and a strategic Hungarian manufacturer in its segment, facing competition exclusively from multinational companies operating mass-production capacities. Medicontur sells its products in more than 75 countries worldwide, with an export ratio exceeding 90 percent, including key markets such as Germany, France, China, South Korea, and Australia.

The company’s achievements in producing ultra-precise and sterile products are largely driven by in-house research and development activities and continuous innovation.

In line with this strategic approach, Medicontur has announced new projects involving investments of EUR 20.8 million in research and development, green transition, and manufacturing capacity expansion. As part of the R&D project, the company plans to develop an extended monofocal lens (Mono Plus), designed to provide sharp distance vision while also offering improved visual performance in the intermediate range. The lens is intended primarily for older adults who seek better intermediate vision without incurring the higher costs of premium lenses.

As part of the capacity expansion project, the company will equip a two-story, 3,600- m² multifunctional hall—constructed earlier with the support of the VNT-2 grant—and install an automated intraocular lens production line. Through automation, Medicontur will triple its production capacity by deploying technology capable of producing 1.5 million intraocular lenses per year.

Within the framework of the Zsámbék projects, Medicontur will not only create 58 new jobs, including 10 R&D positions, but has also committed to registering a priority Hungarian patent for the newly developed product.

With HIPA’s support, investors made positive decisions on 14 research and development projects last year, representing a combined investment value of nearly EUR 570 million. This constitutes a record in HIPA’s history in terms of both the number and total value of projects. The investments will also create nearly 600 research and development jobs.
